Military Tells Stories Of Progress

Published: Aug 21, 2005

U.S. Central Command's online site tells stories of good things happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, captured in a section called ``Latest Stories From The Front Lines.''

Here's a quick look at some of the stories posted there this past week.

------ ``Najaf Water Projects Focus on Supplying More Potable Water'':

The three pipeline projects are 90 percent completed, or better. ``I'm happy to say that everything is going very well, but for every project we do, several more are needed,'' said Darrell Flinn of the Army Corps of Engineers.

------ ``Najaf Road Projects to Bring Critical Transportation for Agriculture, Schools'':

Donkey cart, bicycle and the occasional jury-rigged car have dominated transportation methods in the bumpy, rugged rural Najaf Province for many years. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Gulf Region South District (GRS) has been paving the way for modern asphalt roads in these areas in order to facilitate agriculture sales and to provide better routes to village schools and hospitals.

``Completion of Kandahar to Tarin Kowt Road Near'':

One of the most encouraging successes of the United States Military presence in Afghanistan is the approaching completion of the TK Road, a road bringing together the cities of Kandahar and Tarin Kowt. Coalition forces have been dedicated to connecting Afghanistan by road, a task that has spanned 14 months and 117 kilometers.

------ ``US Army Corps of Engineers rebuilds essential services in Fallujah'':

The US Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the Fallujah City Council and the Fallujah Reconstruction Committee, has made considerable progress in restoring water, sewage and electrical service in the city of Fallujah to levels that existed prior to Operation New Dawn (Al Fajr) in November 2004.
