Upbeat E-Mail Misleading

E-mails heralding good news from Iraq claim political bias keeps the American media from reporting the story of what's going right.

We asked The Associated Press for an assessment of the e-mail's latest version. The review showed much of the e-mail's content came from AP reports.

The e-mail:

Did you know that 3100 schools have been renovated, 364 schools are under rehabilitation, 263 schools are now under construction and 38 new schools have been built in Iraq?

The AP:

``Iraq: Failure and Success'' by Charles Hanley, 10/16/04:

As for schools, although 3,100 have been renovated, an additional 12,000 need to be rebuilt or repaired, the State Department says in its latest Iraq Weekly Status Report.

``Iraq's Untold Stories'' by Ron Word, 7/1/04:

Since the fall of Saddam Hussein, more than 3,000 Iraqi schools have been renovated, 9 million new math and science textbooks have been printed and improvements have been made to utilities and health care, said retired Maj. General Ronald O. Harrison, former adjutant general of the National Guard in Florida.

The e-mail:

Did you know that 25 Iraq students departed for the United States in January 2005 for the re-established Fulbright program?

The AP:

``Iraqi Scholar,'' 8/23/04:

He is one of 23 students and two professors from Iraq who have come to study in the United States under Iraq's newly reinstated Fulbright program.

The e-mail:

Did you know that Iraq's Air Force consists of three operational squadrons, which includes 9 reconnaissance and 3 US C-130 transport aircraft (under Iraqi operational control) which operate day and night, and will soon add 16 UH-1 helicopters and 4 bell jet rangers?

The AP:

``Iraq - Security Forces'' by Sinan Salaheddin, 6/30/05:

There are now more than 75,000 Iraqi soldiers and nearly 93,000 police officers, according to new U.S. military figures.

In less than a year, Iraq's army grew from one battalion in July 2004 to 107 battalions today, Alston said. Iraq's air force has four squadrons equipped with nine reconnaissance aircraft and three C-130 transport planes, he said.

Did you know that the Baghdad Stock Exchange opened in June of 2004?

``Baghdad's Bigboard'' by Tarek El- Tablawy, 7/18/04:

The miniature Liberty Bell clanged. Elbows flew. Sweat poured down foreheads. Sales tickets were passed and,with a flick of the wrist, 10,000 shares of the Middle East Bank had more than doubled in value.

The frantic pace Sunday of those first 10 minutes of trading typified the enthusiasm behind the Iraq Stock Exchange - a new institution seen as a critical step in building a new Iraqi economy.

Did you know that there are 1,192,000 cell phone subscribers in Iraq and phone use has gone up 158%? Did you know that Iraq has an independent media that consist of 75 radio stations, 180 newspapers and 10 television stations?

The AP:

``Iraq: By the Numbers'' by Robin Hindery, 6/27/05:

The number of telephone and Internet subscribers has increased nearly threefold, according to the Washington-based Brookings Institution, and the number of trained Iraqi judges has doubled.

1,200,000 - Telephone subscribers, including cell phones and landlines in June 2004.

3,172,771 - Telephone subscribers as of May 2005.

59,000 - Internet subscribers in June 2004.

147,076 - Internet subscribers as of May 2005.

13 - Commercial television stations in June 2004.

23 - Commercial television stations as of May 2005.

150 - Independent newspapers and magazines in June 2004.

170 - Independent newspapers and magazines as of May 2005.
